2:12_02.27.2007: the wall begins to crumble

the pieces are coming together like cinder blocks stacked up before a refrigerator box. solutions made to problems that may not be problems. regardless, they are things that bother me. ive been smoothing out these three bits obsessivley.

watched prestige.

they are the three bits of the film that require the most effects so once they are set the rest will flow......

into place. or not. that will be known at the end.
each day has been a step forward not only in the progress of the piece but my understanding of it. as well as increased knowledge of my tools. never before have i felt like a digital artist.
the tools have been in use up until now, but always as assistants to something else.

many of my decisions are aesthetically based. how best to composite information. realistically, no. by moving the route of realism in compositing, while i dont like to admit it, is simply a design problem. it will not look right. that, or ive given up on attempting realism. on the other hand what matters most is my idea, which has little to do with realism, therefore what matters most aesthetically is not whether or not it is believable but impacting, immersive and visually legible. with those principals the current design is working, how it connects with the rest of the footage is the next hurdle.

12:42_02.21.2007: an inadequate ruse

the piece is loooking flat, the composites will do that, make it all look like sheets hanging upon one another. i think to push that look is my best option. to have the charaters obviously not be interacting with one another says something about the intangability of the concept. lack of material, lack of explanation, lack of physical space. its a ruse, but not a very good one. the point of composites typically is to construct a scenario that the viewer would percieve as reality. my composites however replicate a possible reality in a way that informs the viewer that there is no way it is real. this leaves the viewer processing information that is in no way believable.

so what does it do to the viewer, what does it do to the piece? without mystical realism, the piece becomes more of a structure for concept. it is not a piece of care free entertainment but rather is designed to cause reactions of curiosity and confusion in the brain, to activate the brain.

in its confusion, in its absurdity, like a drill it is designed to push beyond the surface past the parts of the brain that we consciously use, and into an unreacble zone of understanding. that is where it comes from so that is where it is understood.

6:20_2.20.2007: crumpled up and thrown away

its far and close
as the sun sets it rises
SDR is taking on a seasonal element.
rain and water are pulling in closer to the subject matter
molly will enact her monologue under water
devin will stand in the rain
echoey drops fall into a small pool in audio form as molly rides the elevator home
the structure is tightening
threads pulling the sails tight
it might survive the storm
it will float im sure

12:29_02.14.2007: artist statement as delivered to a dear friend somewhere on the east coast

whether narrative based or free floating , my work has a voice inspired by abstract connections, yet underneath, in some unconscious form, the relationship of the content makes sense. the resulting product is something of a puzzle. the process, hidden within the final work, is the concept.

2:21_02.13.2007: intake valve set to negative three...

under the skin, below the capillaries and wriggly bloody veins, beyond the deep purple pulsing pockets and pretty blue patches, through the solid smooth and shimmering skull, past the fluid that tastes of diluted yet bitter apircots that you brain floats gracefully in omitting car crashes and roller coaster, deep within the fabric of the noggin, those fat udon noodle like cords, beyond the storm clouds of magical electric explosions sending messages about pooping and hunger, beyond the cluster of subconscious receptors telling you, you want that boat, you NEED that boat, just beyond the center most flappy curl that resides deep within like the center of a cinnamon roll like the center of the earth is a little patch of grass, softly lit under a dim light, the likes of which you'd find in a garden in late spring, a little you sits, twiddling your thumbs looking ahead and breating gently, fantasizing of the wonderful fictitous adventures of little samurai, steven segal the samurai, shrunk down in size to 11.5 inches and sent out to contact and transport back a most important member of an endangered form of jack rabbit, resist the rabit does but eventually agree he does, and through wasteland past man and beast steven and the rabbit travel toward salvation for both the rabbits species and mans.

the question lingering ever in the back of the little samurai steven segal's mind: do i want to prevail?

12:02_02.12.2007: its beginning to look a lot like cult-fest

Shot the Blue Screen this weekend. a much less magical form of "technology" than i realized. incredibly cheesy actually. in any case, let the editing begin.

clown shot. tricky now, audio needs work. color good. rat this weekend. still need seran wrap and teeth. NEED TO MAKE TEETH. molly will be girl. A: beautiful. B: part of my life C: something else entirely

then stuff to start building...FINALLY.

get a TV...Keep moving... Devin Last...i anticipate from him the most resistance and the best preformance. still searching for a wall.

in the end...audio is truly the heart of the piece, a solid movement created through this jungle of imagery and ideas.

i cannot say what it will look like, bad, most likely. a tacky joke. but the sound, if done right will truly be a fine piece of work.
