12:42_02.21.2007: an inadequate ruse
the piece is loooking flat, the composites will do that, make it all look like sheets hanging upon one another. i think to push that look is my best option. to have the charaters obviously not be interacting with one another says something about the intangability of the concept. lack of material, lack of explanation, lack of physical space. its a ruse, but not a very good one. the point of composites typically is to construct a scenario that the viewer would percieve as reality. my composites however replicate a possible reality in a way that informs the viewer that there is no way it is real. this leaves the viewer processing information that is in no way believable.
so what does it do to the viewer, what does it do to the piece? without mystical realism, the piece becomes more of a structure for concept. it is not a piece of care free entertainment but rather is designed to cause reactions of curiosity and confusion in the brain, to activate the brain.
in its confusion, in its absurdity, like a drill it is designed to push beyond the surface past the parts of the brain that we consciously use, and into an unreacble zone of understanding. that is where it comes from so that is where it is understood.

Alright, homeboy. Here's what I think:
The heavy matte work is nice. The idea of mixed drawn/pixelated background is nice. The video element doesn't fit so well within it. Manipulate the video, maybe desaturate, maybe drop some frames so it gets a little jerky, maybe throw some static noise over it. Right now it's got the feeling of cheap (1 CCD) video camera, but that's not cheap enough. I don't know, maybe wipe some dirt and grime on the lens before filming next. You're right about pushing it, push this way as well.
